Meccan, 182 verses
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
By those who lined up in rows,
and those who drive away (evil or clouds) strongly,
and those reading a reminder,
that your god is certainly One,
the Lord of the skies and the earth and whatever between them, and the Lord of the easts.
Indeed We beautified the sky of the world with beauty of the stars
and as a guard against every defiant devil.
They can not listen to the high assembly, for they are pelted from every side,
chased away, and they will have an everlasting punishment,
except someone who snatches (and overhears) the snatch (the word), then a piercing shooting flame follows him.
So ask their opinion: “Are they a harder creation or those whom We created (such as angels and the universe)?” Indeed We created them from sticky clay.
Rather, you are surprised while they ridicule.
And when they are reminded, they do not take notice.
And when they see a sign they ridicule,
and they say: “This is only an obvious magic,
will we be raised after we are dead and turned into dust and bones,
or our forefathers?”
Say: “Yes, and you will be humiliated.”
It is only a single shout, and then they see,
and they say: “Woe to us, this is the Judgment Day.”
This is the day of separation/decision, the one that you used to deny.
Gather those who did wrong and their kinds and what they used to serve
besides God, and lead them to the path of hellfire.
And stop them (on the way), indeed they are questioned (and are responsible).
What is with you that you do not help each other?
No, but today they are surrendered.
And they turn to each other asking one another,
they say: “Indeed you were coming to us from the right (to seduce us).”
They (the others) say: “No, but you were not believers,
and there was no authority for us over you, but you were rebellious people,
so the word of our Lord is justified against us, indeed we will taste (the punishment).
So we misled you, as we were indeed misled.”
And indeed on that day they are partners in the punishment.
Indeed that is what We do to the guilty ones.
Indeed when it was said to them there is no god except God, they were arrogant (and did not accept).
And they would say: “Should we give up our gods for a mad poet?”
No, but he brought the truth and confirmed the messengers (before him).
Indeed you will taste the painful punishment.
And you are only punished for what you used to do.
Except for God's devoted servants.
They have a known provision,
(all kinds of) fruits, and they are honored
in the gardens of delight,
on sofas facing each other.
A cup of spring water is circulated among them,
white and delicious for the drinkers,
no sickness in it, and they do not get exhausted (and drunk) from it.
And with them will be girls with restrained glances and beautiful eyes,
as if they were protected eggs (or pearls).
And they turn to each other asking one another.
A talker among them says: “Indeed I had a close friend”
saying: “Are you among those confirming (the Resurrection and the Judgment)?
Would we indeed be judged when we die and become dust and bones?”
He says: “Do you know (where he is)?”
Then he looks and sees him in the middle of hellfire.
He says: “By God, you almost ruined me,
and if it was not for my Lord’s favor, I would have certainly been of those who are brought (to hell).
Are we not to die (again)
except our first death, and we are not punished?
Indeed this is the great victory.”
For (something) like this, the doers should do (good deeds).
Is this a better reception or the Zaqqum tree?
Indeed We made it a suffering for the wrongdoers.
It is a tree that comes out from the bottom of hellfire,
its bud is like devils’ heads.
And they certainly eat from it and fill their stomachs from it.
Then indeed they will have a mixture of boiling water (to drink) over it.
Then their return will be to the hellfire.
Indeed they found their fathers misguided,
and yet they rushed (to follow) in their footsteps.
And most of the earlier ones have certainly lost (the right path) before them.
And We have certainly sent warners among them.
So see what the end of those who were warned was,
except God's devoted servants.
And Noah had certainly called Us, and We are certainly the best of responders.
And We saved him and his family from the great distress.
And We made his descendants the survivors.
And We left for him (a good name) among the later ones.
Peace (and well-being) upon Noah among humankind.
That is how We reward the good doers.
Indeed he was among Our believing servants.
So We drowned the others.
And indeed among his followers was Abraham.
When he came to his Lord with a sound heart.
When he said to his father and his people: “What do you serve?
Do you want false gods besides God?
So what do you think about the Lord of humankind?”
Then he looked a glance at the stars.
Then he said: “Indeed I am sick (of your practices).”
So they turned back from him going away.
Then he turned to their gods and said: “Will you not eat?
What is with you, why don’t you speak?”
Then he turned on them, striking (them) with the right hand.
So they (his people) came to him in a hurry.
He said: “Do you serve what you carve,
while God created you and what you do (and make)?”
They said: “Build a structure (a furnace) for him, and throw him into the great fire.”
They wanted to plot against him, but We made them the lower ones (failing in their plot).
And he said: “Indeed I will go to my Lord, He is going to guide me,
my Lord, give me (a son) from the righteous.”
So We gave him the good news of a patient boy.
So when he reached the (age of) working with him, he said: “My son, indeed I saw in the dream that I sacrifice you, so see what you think?” He said: “My father, do what you are ordered, God willing you are going to find me of the patient ones.”
So when they both submitted and he (Abraham) put him down on the forehead,
We called him: “Abraham,
you have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed that is how We reward the good doers.
Indeed this was the obvious test,
and We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.
And We left for him (a good name) among the later ones.
Peace (and well-being) on Abraham.
That is how We reward the good doers.
Indeed he was among Our believing servants.
And We gave him good news of Isaac, a prophet from the righteous.
And We blessed him and Isaac, and from their descendants, (some) are good doers and (some) are obviously wrongdoers to themselves.
And We have certainly favored upon Moses and Aaron.
And We saved them both and their people from the great distress.
And We helped them, so they became the winners.
And We gave them the clear (and clarifying) book,
and We guided them to the straight path.
And We left both of them (a good name) among the later ones.
Peace (and well-being) on Moses and Aaron.
Indeed that is how We reward the good doers.
Indeed they were both among Our believing servants.
And indeed Elias (Elijah) was one of the messengers.
When he said to his people: “Will you not be cautious (of God)?
Do you call on Baal and you abandon the best of creators?
God is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.”
So they denied him, therefore they will be brought (to the punishment),
except God's devoted servants.
And We left for him (a good name) among the later ones.
Peace (and well-being) on El Yasin (Elias).
Indeed that is how We reward the good doers.
Indeed he was among Our believing servants.
And indeed Lot was one of the messengers.
When We saved him and his family altogether.
Except an old woman (his wife who was) among those staying behind.
Then We destroyed the others.
And indeed you pass by them in the morning
and by the night. Do you not understand?
And indeed Jonah was one of the messengers.
When he ran away to the loaded ship.
Then he drew lots and he was of those thrown off (the ship).
So the whale swallowed him, and he was to blame.
And if he was not among those who glorify (God),
he would have remained in its belly until the day of rising.
So We threw him on the bare shore while he was sick.
And We made a plant of squash grew over him.
And We sent him to a hundred thousand or more (people).
And they believed, so We let them enjoy for a while.
So ask their opinion: “Are daughters for your Lord, and sons for them?
Or did We create the angels as females, and they were witnesses?”
No doubt, indeed as part of their lies they will say:
“God has fathered (children).” And they are certainly liars.
Did He choose daughters over sons?
What is with you? How do you judge?
Do you not take notice?
Or do you have a clear reason?
Then bring your book (document), if you are truthful.
And they have made a relationship between Him and the Jinn, while the Jinn certainly knew that they shall be brought (to judgment),
God is flawless about what they describe.
Except God's devoted servants (who are saved from the punishment).
So indeed you and what you serve,
you will not be able to mislead any one (of God's devoted servants),
except someone who enters (and burns in) the hellfire.
And (the angels say:) “No one is from us unless he has a known position,
and we are certainly those lined up in rows,
and we are certainly those who glorify (God).”
And they (the disbelievers) certainly used to say:
“Indeed if we had a reminder (or a scripture) from the earlier ones with us,
we would have certainly been of God's devoted servants.”
And they disbelieved in it (Quran), so they will know.
And Our word has already gone out to Our servants, the messengers,
that they are certainly helped,
and indeed Our troops are the winners.
So turn away from them for a while,
and look at them, for they will see.
Do they want Our punishment in a hurry?
When it comes down to their courtyard, it is a bad morning for those who were warned.
And turn away from them for a while,
and look, for they will see.
Your Lord, the Lord of power (and honor), is flawless about what they describe.
And peace (and well-being) upon the messengers.
